Each year we solicit staff member applications for grants and each year we receive many great ideas for projects that enhance the education of Solon Springs school students. Over the last four years we’ve been able to combine your gifts with funds from other sources for $30,000 in grants.
This year we received over $18,000 in proposals. We were able to work with other funding sources to leverage $14,000, covering almost all the proposals. So far, we have obtained funding for science materials like electronic balances and grow lights; classroom library books, musical instruments, snowshoes, and updates to classroom furniture, computers and video equipment.
New Donor Opportunity Will Support Cross Country Skiing
With that funding in place, we are able to focus our grants this year on two cross-country skiing projects. Several school staff members have introduced students to this winter sport in the past few years. You may have read recently in the Superior Telegram that students participated in the virtual Barne Birkie ski race. The Foundation looks to encourage this life-long activity by funding the purchase of up to 20 ski packages and help fund transportation and registration for future events.
We ask your help this year in raising $4,000 for these projects. The Foundation will match the first $2,000 raised. With our match, a $100 donation would sponsor one student.
